More than 13,000 drivers explore new Marão Portugal tunnel over first weekend

Between its inauguration on Saturday and Sunday evening, more than 13,000 people had driven through the Marão Tunnel in northern Portugal, which links Amarante to Vila Real.
The tunnel, which is the longest on the Iberian Peninsula at around six kilometres, takes four minutes to drive through at a cost of a couple of euros for a normal passenger vehicle.
It was formally opened on Saturday by Prime Minister António Costa who was joined at the ceremony by former premier José Sócrates, whose cabinet initiated the building of the tunnel.

The tunnel is part of a new motorway whose construction was the largest public project in Portugal in recent years, at a cost of around €398 million.
